About Contextualize

Contextualize is a software company building the infrastructure that keeps organizational knowledge intact — not just the data organizations generate, but the reasoning, decisions, and relationships that give that data meaning.

The Problem That Started It

More than two decades ago, Contextualize founder and CEO Branden Kappes watched something that repeats itself constantly in research environments: years of hard-won institutional knowledge walking out the door when researchers left a lab. The data stayed. The understanding didn't.

The experimental context — why a parameter was set this way, what changed between runs, which prior result informed this decision — lived in people's heads and informal notes. When those people moved on, that understanding had to be re-derived from scratch, if it could be recovered at all.

Branden spent the next two decades working toward a structural solution to this problem. Not a documentation tool. Not a data platform. Infrastructure that makes knowledge preservation a byproduct of normal work — so that understanding compounds over time instead of resetting every time a team changes.

That solution is Carta.

Who We Are

The Contextualize team sits at the intersection of computer science and domain expertise — equal parts software engineers and materials scientists. We believe materials scientists shouldn't have to become computer scientists to efficiently use their data, and computer scientists shouldn't have to become metallurgists, chemists, or process engineers to build useful software for them.

That dual fluency shows up in the product. Carta's design reflects how scientific work actually happens — forms that capture process context, not just outputs; permissions that travel with data across institutional boundaries; automation that connects instruments to coordination systems without requiring shared infrastructure between them.

Where We Work

Contextualize's current deployment focus is materials science and advanced manufacturing — the domain where our team's expertise runs deepest and where the knowledge preservation problem is most acute. Our active deployments span materials characterization, mechanical testing, and multi-institution manufacturing research.

Carta enhances, not replaces, your current tools and systems. Organizations don't need to abandon their existing infrastructure to work with us — Carta connects to what you already have and adds the coordination and context-preservation layer on top.

The software itself is industry-agnostic. The problems Carta solves — fragmented institutional knowledge, disconnected instruments and data systems, coordination overhead across organizational boundaries — exist across many fields. We see clear applicability in bio/pharma research, clinical and hospital operations, financial services, and beyond.

We go where the problem is.
